West Coast Green--Mary Cordaro and Jennifer Roberts, Author of Good Green Kitchens, Redux & Good Green Homes present: The Healthy Home: A Virtual Walk-Through

West Coast Green Conference Dates: September 25-27, 2008
(Exacte date/time of lecture below to be determined)

Location: San Jose, California

Our homes should be havens where body and spirit are rejuvenated. Instead, too many homes are hazardous to human health, thanks in large part to modern building materials and construction techniques. Among homeowners, fears are mounting that their homes may be causing or exacerbating allergies, headaches, sleep disorders, asthma and other serious health effects.
Increasingly, architects, builders, remodelers, interior designers and other building professionals are being called upon to take their own version of the physician's oath: "First, do no harm." But in the increasingly complex world of residential design and construction, where do you begin?
Join a conversation between Mary Cordaro, environmental consultant and certified Bau-Biologist, and author Jennifer Roberts, as they take you on a virtual walk-through of Cordaro's own healthy home.
Using video clips, they will show her ongoing "lab," a 1950s Southern Californian house that she has been renovating over the past 18 years using principles that integrate Bau-Biologie and building science. In the process, they will highlight fundamental strategies for identifying and remediating common home-health problems.
Although the topic of healthy homes could easily fill a week-long course, Cordaro and Roberts will distill the subject down to four core concepts: 1) choosing safer interior materials and products, including flooring, finishes, plaster and paint; 2) retrofitting to improve ventilation and reduce indoor air pollution; 3) controlling moisture intrusion to reduce health hazards associated with moisture and mold; and 4) reducing exposure to electromagnetic fields.

Lecture: The Healthy Home and Bedroom: Creating a Non-Toxic, Healing Haven with Bau-Biologie

Friday, November 7th

Location: The Weston A. Price Foundation Ninth Annual Conference, Hyatt Regency San Francisco Airport, Burlingame, California

Our homes are places for rest, retreat and regeneration. According to the field of Bau-Biologie*, if designed, built and furnished simply, thoughtfully and intelligently, our homes can help us restore our natural balance and connection with nature. For most of us, however, creating a healthy home environment is often unfamiliar-- and sometimes overwhelming--territory. Where do we begin? The key is in the bedroom: it's the most important room in the house, where we spend 1/3 of our lives and when we are most vulnerable. During sleep, our bodies must truly let down in order to regenerate and heal, so that our immune systems can better handle what we can't control during our daily lives. For babies and children, it is particularly important that the developing immune and endocrine systems are supported, without interference from harmful pollutants commonly found in most homes. However, many of us who eat healthy diets and lead healthy lifestyles are unaware of the short and long term health effects of high EMF's (electromagnetic fields), chemicals from furnishings and bedding, mold and other contaminants. Using the principles from the Germany field of Bau-Biologie, learn to create a healthy home and bedroom for you and your family, with easy solutions to get you started, including:
  • Why green materials aren't necessarily healthy and how to choose wisely
  • How to screen for mold and other contaminants
  • How to create a low EMF home
  • How best to ventilate, and best types of air filtration
*Bau-Biologie, which means "building with life" is a field that originated in Germany. It is the study of how living and working environments affect both human and planetary health.
